Guest artists coming to Indian Hills Community College
OTTUMWA — Indian Hills Community College’s Department of Performing and Visual Arts will present two guest artists in recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14. Rachel Walker Corpus, soprano, and Edward Corpus, bass, will sing solo and duet selections accompanied by pianist Michael Philipsen. The concert is free and open to the public in St. John Auditorium.
Rachel Walker Corpus is an Albia native who has been singing, dancing and acting since the age of four. Her performance credits include Mabel in Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance,” “Cherubno” from Mozart's “Marriage of Figaro,” Despina in Mozart's “Cosi fan Tutte,” Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz” and Liesel in “The Sound of Music.” Corpus’ musical directing and choreography credits include “Crazy for You,” “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” selected scenes from “Carmen,” “Annie,” “Oklahoma,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “Treasure Island,” “Grease” and “Cinderella.”
Walker Corpus is the choral director, grades 5-12, for the Albia Community School District.
Edward Corpus, bass, earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Illinois State University and a Master of Music degree from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas He recently completed coursework for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Iowa.
Corpus is a three-time consecutive winner of the N.A.T.S. vocal competition and a winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council District Audition. His most recent operatic performances have included Sparafucile in “Rigoletto,” Zuniga in “Carmen” and Colline in “La Bohème” with Opera Quad Cities; William Jennings Bryan in “The Ballad of Baby Doe” with Peoria’s Opera Illinois; the Modern Major-General in “Pirates of Penzance” with Cedar Rapids Opera and Escamillo in “Carmen” with the University of Iowa Opera Theater.
His oratorio repertoire includes Fauré’s “Requiem,” Dubois’ “The Seven Last Words of Christ,” Mozart’s “Requiem and Mass in C Minor,” Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion,” Handel’s “Messiah,” and Beethoven’s “Ninth Symphony,” most recently performed with the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra. Corpus will also be a featured soloist in Stephen Paulus’ new work “To be Certain of the Dawn” at the Des Moines Civic Center in April 2009.
In addition to his operatic ventures, Corpus is a singer-songwriter. He teaches voice at Drake University in Des Moines.
Philipsen is the Director of Performing and Visual Arts at IHCC, and has been with the college for 23 years. He directs the Concert Choir and the Camerata Singers, and teaches a variety of courses in the music curriculum. He is a graduate of Simpson College and the University of Missouri with degrees in piano performance, and has studied piano with Robert Haag, Robert Larsen, Roe Van Boskirk, Michael Carson and world-renowned concert pianist Santiago Rodriguez.
