KEOSAUQUA — The Van Buren Players have selected “Cotton Patch Gospel” as this season’s community theater production.
The show is scheduled for March 3-5 in the Roberts Community Center stage in Keosauqua. “Cotton Patch Gospel” is produced by special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Company of Woodstock, Ill.
Written by Tom Key and Russell Treyz, with original music and lyrics by Harry Chapin, the play draws from “The Cotton Patch Version of Matthew and John”, a book by Clarence Jordan.
Jordan wrote his book in the 1940s while helping poor black and white farmers near Americus, Ga., survive and coexist. One of the best-known ideas coming from his work was Habitat For Humanity.
The musical retells the life of Christ, the most familiar story ever told. However, it starts with the question “What if Christ was born in Gainesville, Georgia?” It’s unique use of rural Georgia setting, modern times and upbeat bluegrass music puts a new immediacy and vibrancy into the message of love and compassion.
The show regularly receives rave reviews and widespread acceptance from audiences in all parts of the country. The music is generally accepted as Harry Chapin’s best work, completed shortly before his death in 1981.
There will be something for everyone. Audiences will enjoy the drama, joy and toe- tapping celebration inherent in this show. Cast members will especially enjoy the range of stage craft necessary for the performance. Bluegrass musicians will find a welcoming stage to display their talents.
Actors interested in the wide variety of parts available for the production can audition at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4; or, 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, in the music room of Van Buren High School.
Interested persons unable to attend at those times should contact directors Kathleen or David Paulek at (319) 293-3814.
Musicians interested in auditioning for the bluegrass string band, including banjo, lead guitar, fiddle and mandolin, should contact Jack Barron, (641) 683-3933; Julie Garrels, (641) 675-3429; or, Erin Schmidt, (319) 293-3461.
