The Mahaska County Conservation Board held its annual prairie burn over the weekend near the Russell Wildlife Area. Burn crews torched 49 acres of native Iowa prairie at the Earl De Boef farm just northeast of the Russell Wildlife area. The crews built back fires and burned around the perimeter of the prairie since there was a 14 mph southeast wind. - Duane Nollen/Oskaloosa Herald
