IOWA CITY (AP) — Five former Iowa players signed free agent contracts Monday after being passed over during last weekend’s NFL draft.

Defensive back Miguel Merrick and offensive lineman Mike Jones signed with AFC West champion San Diego. Linebacker Ed Miles signed with Miami and defensive back Marcus Paschal will go to camp with Philadelphia.

Quarterback Drew Tate (pictured) will try to continue his playing career with the St. Louis Rams.

Iowa State defensive tackle Brent Curvey and center Scott Stephenson have signed as free agents with the Carolina Panthers and the Cleveland Browns, respectively.

Curvey finished his career with 222 tackles and 16 sacks. He earned first-team all-Big 12 honors in 2005. Stephenson started a total of 24 career games during the 2005 and 2006 seasons. He earned first-team all-Big 12 honors in 2005.

Three Iowa players — Marshall Yanda, Scott Chandler and Mike Elgin — were selected in the NFL Draft. It marked the fifth time in six seasons that three former Hawkeyes have been drafted.

Cyclone offensive tackle Aaron Brant was picked in the seventh round Sunday by the Chicago Bears.
