Drake holds off Davidson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Drake freshman Dave Witkiewicz blocked a 28-yard field goal try on the game’s final play to lead the Bulldogs past Davidson 20-17.

Patrick Cashmore rushed for a career-high 103 yards for Drake, which scored 17 points off of three Davidson turnovers.

Davidson stopped Drake (4-4, 2-3 Pioneer) on fourth down at the Wildcats 33 with 1:58 left. Davidson drove down to Drake’s 11 before Witkiewicz swatted Ben Behrendt’s potential game-tying field goal.

Ryan Alexander completed 23 of 40 passes for 210 yards to lead Davidson (2-5, 1-4).

Drake fell behind 7-0 before taking the lead with two quick scores in the second quarter. Andy Green returned an interception 46 yards for a touchdown, and Cole Ingle threw an 11-yard TD pass to Stephen Platek less than two minutes later.

Ingle, making just his third start of the season, threw for 188 yards.
