Freedom, liberty, opportunity priceless

OSKALOOSA — Fifty-six rich white men, 236 years ago, voted for, and then signed their names to, the Declaration of Independence. Why would men of influence and money vote for a document that criticized the way the King of England governed the colonies? What did they expect to gain when they had so much to lose? Why would they then pledge their “lives, fortunes and sacred honor” to this cause? Some did lose their lives, some lost their fortune, but none gave up their sacred honor. Would you vote the same as these men knowing the risk they took? Their vote affected, not just these men, but every American since, because they prized liberty and freedom above all else.

What made this country great? Liberty, freedom and the opportunity to become the best you can be; or take the easy way and let the government dictate what we do in life the way King George did? We must understand, the more government does in our lives, the less liberty and freedom we have.

Next month we will have the privilege to vote in a national election, but my, how have times changed. Seems like everyone has an “issue” they are “concerned” about. From abortion “rights” to welfare, we expect the government to take care of it and will vote for anyone who promises to do it.

It is against the law to give money to a government official to vote your way, but it has become a way of life for the government to give us anything we want for your vote.

So, how much do you want for your vote?

• college tuition — $10,000-plus

• health care — $10,000-plus

• food stamps, rent assistance, welfare — $10,000-plus

• free contraception and/or abortion — one human life

• Freedom, liberty, opportunity for all — priceless.
