Make sure to train for Race for the Cure

OTTUMWA — It’s hard to believe that the Race for the Cure is only 12 weeks away and planning this race has been under way since last year’s successful race. The race committee is divided in to many different areas, and to function as a committee, they all have to be on the same page on May 11 this year. Our race committee works well with each other to put on a class event for more than 3,000 people.

What have you been doing to get ready for the race? Sitting on the sofa? Staying inside to keep warm? If you are thinking about being a first-time participant, I would suggest that you look at the 5K schedule in seven weeks put together by the Mayo Clinic at

This will give you a workout schedule that will have you ready to participate in the Race for the Cure on May 11 ... Then you can use to see how far you are running each day ... it’s never too late to start. Starting as a first-time participant should be gradual and allow you to build distance over a period of time. Walking then a small jog and extending the jog a little more each week. The walking, stretching and warm-ups are very important for all people in sports.

For those of you that don’t want to train as hard, there is always the one-mile walk you can do.

Don’t forget that your kids can participate in the kid’s race for ages 1-12.

This is a family happening, and you can be there ... save the date, May 11 (the day before Mothers’ Day).

Applications will be printed shortly, and you’ll be able to register online at

Looking forward to seeing you May 11.
