Governor should cancel his health insurance

RUSSELL — Gov. Branstad is refusing to expand Medicaid to more than 100,000 Iowans, even though the federal government will pay 100 percent of the cost for the first year and over 90 percent of the cost after that.

His latest rationale for denying this coverage is his “belief” that Iowans are unhealthy because of their lifestyle choices, not because of their lack of medical insurance. If he really believes this, then our governor should have no qualms about canceling his own health insurance and that of his family and staff.

If Gov. Branstad refuses to expand Medicaid to thousands of poor Iowans, I do not believe he has the moral right to continue to have health insurance for himself, his family and his staff. It’s way past time for politicians to find out what ordinary people go through when their leaders make decisions that deny them basic health care services.

So cancel your insurance, governor. You’ll be just fine as long as you make healthy choices.
