USSSA tournament a grand success

USSSA tournament a grand success

Kevin Hatfield approached me back in April about using the adult softball league fields as part of a USSSA Girls State Softball Tournament for June 29-30. I really did not know what to expect but told him we would be able to have this tournament. What I came to expect was a tournament that was a huge success.

Thank you, USSSA Girls Softball and the Ottumwa Girls Youth Softball League. Thanks to Robert Greiner Jr. for running the tournament, Jamie Lemonds and all of the board members of the league, volunteers and parents for helping at the girls fields.

Thanks to everyone at the Ottumwa Adult Softball League Fields. Loren McIntosh, Jeff and Angie Griffiths, Joe and Tiff Young, Gary and Greg Heaton, Jordan Young, Lindsay Howard, Brian Jones, Sharon Gooden and Koree and Angie Strong were all involved with concessions and the upkeep of the fields. Thanks to Pierce Fencing for the fence and Messerschmidt Ice for the ice.

Thank you to the city of Ottumwa and the Parks Board for allowing us and helping us to replace the rock infield with red ball dirt. This is the best thing that ever happened to these fields in the nearly 30 years I have been playing softball. This tournament probably would have never happened without this improvement to these two fields.

Most importantly, thanks to all the girls that participated. That is really what an event like this is all about. Competition and sportsmanship was at a very high level. What a showcase for Ottumwa with 33 teams in town. I am pretty sure all the hotels, eating establishments and businesses would agree.

Congratulations to all the Ottumwa teams and good luck to the 14U Ottumwa Girls in Kansas City at the national tournament.
