---- — On behalf of the Laureate Guild and Indian Hills Community College Art and Culinary Departments, we would like to thank everyone who attended our first “Soup for the Arts” fundraiser held at Indian Hills on March 21. The event was held to raise money for scholarships for the Fine Art and Culinary Arts students, as well as a yet-to-be-determined community project chosen by the Laureate Guild. When this new idea was brought to a small committee of people from Indian Hills and Laureate Guild, our goal was to perhaps build this into a successful annual or bi-annual event over time. Only in our wildest dreams did we think that it would happen the first year.
We would also like to thank the people in our community who made this possible. Instructors Mark McWhorter and Lisa Fritz, along with former and present students, were able to provide us with more than 254 beautiful handmade bowls to choose from. In addition, the Indian Hills Culinary Arts students and staff under the direction of Chef Kivlahan baked all the breads and worked hard to set up the venue and serve our guests. Laureate Guild members filled in the rest of the duties to help things run smoothly that evening.
Hats off to our sponsors including: Hy-Vee North and South, Appanoose Rapids Brewing Co., Bridge View Center, Fareway Stores, The Lucky Rooster, Ottumwa Country Club, The Second Street Cafe and Reinhart Food Services. Their generosity and cooperation allowed us to carry out the entire fundraiser with little expense. Once again, our wonderful community came through. Many thanks to the ticket buyers who took a chance on something new, and it is our hope that you will take time to thank our business sponsors by soliciting their businesses. As the old saying goes, “It takes a village.” This event proves that great new things can happen when we band together.
