Securing a better future for local ball

Dear Ottumwa community,

On behalf of the Securing a Better Baseball Future Committee (SBBF) for Baseball Improvements, we are working our hardest to get word out to the Ottumwa community about our new project. We are raising money for a new multipurpose building that will be located at the Ottumwa Babe Ruth Fields on Teal in Greater Ottumwa Park. The facility we are currently using is in very poor condition as it stands now. The current building was built in 1971, and it is time for the Ottumwa community to capitalize on their deep baseball heritage and bring this facility into a new competitive era. The players need this to feel excited about starting the new season and take pride in their stomping grounds at the fields.

Since 1952, the 13- to 18-year-old division of Ottumwa baseball has supported thousands of kids in their dreams on and off the field. Ottumwa youth baseball has continually helped kids grow not only in baseball skills but in character. Over the past 10 years, we have produced 18 state championships, three regional championships and three World Series appearances. In 2011, we finished third in the country, competing in the state of Washington. They have also received a number of sportsmanship awards. This year alone, they won state titles in the 13s, 15s and 18U divisions.

The committee’s plan is to construct a new, two-story building which will house a concession stand, restrooms, storage and press boxes. The new building will be a 30-foot by 36-foot, two-story multipurpose building that will house a new concession stand, men’s and women’s restrooms and storage for field equipment on the first floor. The second story of the building will consist of a large press box that will eventually serve both fields and team lockers for uniform and team equipment storage. Also included will be a foul ball safety protection system that has been a need of the facility for many years. This is a netting system that will be hung over the spectator area that will keep visitors safe from foul balls hit out of the fields. With this new building and protection system, Ottumwa baseball will be in a better position to host multi-team tournaments which will bring many visitors to our community.
