As a new member of the Ottumwa Human Rights Commission, I’m helping plan what’s sure to be an event to remember. Please join us at Quincy Place Mall on Saturday, April 6, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the 15th annual International Festival in Ottumwa. Sponsored by the Ottumwa Human Rights Commission and the Convention Visitors Bureau, this year’s event is shaping up to be a fun-filled day for the entire family.
We’ll have many booths representing different nations like Switzerland and Scotland and organizations within our community such as 4-H and Girl Scouts. As we explore new ways to revitalize this celebration of ethnic and cultural diversity, we’re also teaming up with local restaurants and businesses, including Ashby’s Food, HyVee North Deli, Bubba Q’s, The Little Bake Shop, The Tasty Burrito and more, to offer all sorts of delicious international foods. Samples will be available, and our vendors will be selling everything from ice cream to pizza, brats, tenderloins and egg rolls to fabulous BBQ as well as delicious cake balls, coffee and other sweet treats. And don’t miss the jumbo burritos and out-of-this-world cheesecake! You’re sure to find something to please everyone in the family!
In addition, we’ve ramped up this year’s entertainment, kicking off with a live performance of the National Anthem followed by the Ottumwa Christian School Choir, live jazz music to be performed over the noon hour, island song and dance presented by a group from the Marshall Islands, Middle Eastern dance and more. We’ll also have pinatas for the kids to break and are planning to have a mariachi band as well!
Please mark you calendars for the International Festival. For more information, go to www.cityofottumwa.org. We are thankful for the time, effort and willingness of those involved in putting on this year’s festival and hope everyone will come out, support our community and have some fun in the process. Hope to see you there!
