Birmingham man dies in grain bin accident

BIRMINGHAM — Authorities believe a rural Birmingham man’s death to asphyxiation was an accident.

Authorities were called at 8:59 a.m. Tuesday to the 13500 block of Jasmine Avenue outside of Birmingham, after a report that Donald Goematt, 70, was trapped in a grain bin.

Rescue workers extracted Goematt and transported him to the Van Buren County Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities aren’t sure what happened, but the incident is considered an accident, and there is no further investigation, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office, Keosauqua Fire Department, Douds First Responders and Van Buren County Ambulance all responded to the incident.
