Jefferson Co. Supervisors consider gay marriage resolution
By MATT MILNER Courier staff writer
FAIRFIELD — While counties across Iowa began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, the Jefferson County Board of Supervisors met to consider a resolution urging legislators to allow a vote on the issue.
Board Chairman Steve Burgmeier said the board wants legislators to put themselves on the record on the issue. Democratic leaders in the Legislature blocked votes on amending Iowa’s constitution to ban gay marriage during the session that ended Sunday.
Undoing the Iowa Supreme Court’s ruling that legalized gay marriage remains a goal for opponents of the decision. That effort would most likely be through a constitutional amendment and requires passage by two consecutive general assemblies and then a popular vote.
The other option the supervisors envisioned in their resolution goes in the other direction, asking legislators to vote and bring Iowa’s legal code into line with the supreme court’s decision.
The resolution, which passed unanimously, doesn’t express a preference for either option.
“We passed a resolution asking for a review by the Legislature or a vote by the people of Iowa,” Burgmeier said. “We want to know where legislators stand.”
Jefferson County Recorder Charlotte Fleig said one same-sex couple sought a marriage license on Monday.
