Career Connections Program helps special education students prepare for employment

Students in the program volunteer to remain in school an extra year

By MARK NEWMAN Courier staff writer

Job shadowing is a good way for a high school student to see the realities of a job. Though new to the position this year, Stevens said he’s excited by the support local businesses have give the program, from bringing a student out to the workplace for a full shift to allowing a mentor to come along on a job interview.

One student recently discovered during a day on the work site that he liked two out of three aspects of the job. He liked being outside, he loved working hard, but was overwhelmed by some of the rapid decision-making necessary.

So now, Stevens said, that student is working — full time, with benefits — in a job with less stress but more effort.

“He’s very happy,” Stevens said.

Mark Newman can be reached at 683-5358 or by e-mail at mgnewman@mchsi.com.
