OTTUMWA — Edwin Ramos will spend 40 years in prison according to the terms of the plea bargain in his case.
Ramos, 38, admitted in the agreement to going to Scooter’s Sports Bar last summer and shooting Eliodoro Basilio and Maurici Pineda.
Wapello County Attorney Allen Cook said the bargain dismissed the attempted murder charges that Ramos originally faced. In exchange, Ramos pleaded guilty to three counts of willful injury, one count for each gunshot wound Ramos inflicted. He also entered guilty pleas for being a felon in possession of a firearm and going armed with intent.
Willful injury is a Class C felony. The other two counts are Class D felonies.
The courts have two basic options for sentencing: consecutive or concurrent. Consecutive sentences run one after the other. If a person is paroled on one sentence, they immediately begin serving the next. Concurrent sentences allow an inmate to accrue time toward multiple sentences at the same time. Cook said the agreement included a requirement that the sentences run consecutively.
Ramos had been scheduled to go on trial in the shootings next month. Cook said in April that the two sides were negotiating a plea bargain.
