Race for the Cure runs again

Brisk weather doesn’t slow down runners

By SCOTT NILES Courier staff writer

“This is great,” Littlejohn said.

Last year, they had between 2,100 and 2,300 participants. They were hoping for 2,500 this year.

“We’ve come close to our goal,” she said. “And it is great weather today for runners.”

Saturday morning’s weather was a little brisk, but ideal conditions for running.

Winner of the women’s divisions Kristin Mitchell, who has won the race at least the past two years, said the weather was perfect. She also has a personal connection to the race.

“My husband’s aunt died of breast cancer,” she said. “I think pretty much everyone knows someone who has or has had breast cancer at one time.”

This year there was also a new winner among the men’s division.

Ottumwan Kevin Lewis, who is a freshman cross county runner at Ottumwa High School, said he has not personally been affected by anyone with breast cancer, but knows that the money is for a good cause and that makes him feel like it is worth it.

“It’s a good thing and we need to find a cure for it,” he said. “I think they will.”
