Ottumwa school board to examine education-related legislation
By MARK NEWMAN Courier staff writer
OTTUMWA — Superintendent Jon Sheldahl and Business Manager John Donner will present the Ottumwa school board and the public with a summary of education-related legislation which came about in the most recent session of the Iowa House during next week’s board meeting.
“Regarding legislative change,” said Donner, “we’ll talk about allowable growth [of the budget] for 2010; the SILO one cent statewide sales tax and how that affects Ottumwa community schools; the mandated Iowa ‘Core Curriculum’ that was passed, we’ll have a little bit of conversation about that.”
Sheldahl will explain changes to school board election procedures.
According to the state, a decision to hold school elections every two years will save taxpayers money. But that means some Iowa school board members will not know for certain when their terms expire.
“That’s some of the major topics we’ll hit,” said Donner, “and obviously we’ll go into a little more detail.”
Also, during Iowa School Board Recognition Week, the administration will present the board with a proclamation from the city of Ottumwa thanking the members — all volunteers — for their service.
Though the meeting is open to the public, the school board will go into a closed session toward the end of the session. They will be evaluating Sheldahl’s performance.
