Drowning reported at Lake Arrowhead, east of Ottumwa

OTTUMWA — A body was recovered in a lake east of Ottumwa Sunday morning, according to the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office.

The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call, reporting a possible drowning at Lake Arrowhead at 7:32 p.m. Saturday. Officers responded to the lake assisted by the Agency Fire Department, Ormics and Wapello Rural Fire Department.

It was determined that Larry A. Davis, 22, of New Albany, Ind., was with a group of friends swimming at the lake. He was about 20 feet from the shore and got into deep water. He went down and did not resurface again, according to police. Rescue attempts were made by some of the individuals present but were not successful.

A search was conducted by the Sheriff’s office Saturday night and was called off at about 10 p.m., and was resumed Sunday morning. Davis’ body was recovered at 9:55 a.m. Sunday.

The body was sent to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny for an autopsy.

The investigation continues by the Sherriff’s Office and the Wapello County Medical Examiners Office.
