BY CINDY TOOPES COURIER STAFF WRITER
OTTUMWA — A public hearing on how to spend the 2009 Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program funds is one of the few items on the City Council’s agenda for Tuesday.
In his report, Police Chief Jim Clark noted the $40,799 grant will provide funds for handguns and accessories, a computer system and the start-up of a K-9 program.
Clark also said the grant is shared with the Wapello County Sheriff’s Department. The county will receive $6,120, which will cover the handguns and accessories.
The city will use the remaining $34,679 for the computer system and starting the K-9 program.
In other action, the council will vote on the bids for the dog park. The Bark Park Committee has raised enough money for a fence and the city has received two bids, $8,985.65 from Pierce Fence Co. and $9,854 from Gullet Fence Company.
In his report, Parks Director Gene Rathje said he wanted to start the fence project as soon as possible.
During the time allowed for reports from city officers, boards or committees, a representative from Ottumwa Economic Development Corporation will update the council on OEDC activities.
The council will also consider:
• An administrative services agreement between the city and Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield for the city’s group health insurance.
• Setting a public hearing for selling a vacant lot at 261 S. Davis St. to Habitat for Humanity.
The council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers, City Hall. The meeting is open to the public and the proceedings will be broadcast live on GO-TV, cable Channel 6.
