E-B school board wishes to continue longstanding agreement with Fremont

EDDYVILLE — The Eddyville-Blakesburg School Board this week discussed its desire to continue a longstanding agreement of whole-grade sharing at the high school level with the Fremont school district.
The board recently received a letter from the Fremont School Board indicating that they would like to compare options before deciding to renew a 28E agreement for whole grade sharing.
The letter states in part, “Fremont Community School District would like to present a side-by-side comparison of Eddyville Blakesburg Community School District and Pekin Community School District to the Fremont Community.”
The Fremont board provided a list of nine detailed questions with a request to answer those questions in chart format to be displayed at a public forum on June 30 at the Fremont Community Center.
But E-B Board President Ed Glenn indicated that a chart comparison would not be good business,.
“I don’t think we want to be in a position to be in competition with another district. These questions were addressed openly at the joint board meeting. We are willing and able to continue this agreement. We have a good district there are other good districts in the state,” he said.
E-B board members agreed they are still interested in continuing the agreement with Fremont and would be willing to answer the letter as well as provide a presence at the meeting. However, they did not want it to seem that E-B and Pekin are pitted against each other.
The Fremont board’s biggest concern seems to be with keeping the school in Fremont open should the district need to consolidate with another district at some future date. Yet no district could really provide promises such as that because it would be up to a future consolidated board and the finances of that consolidated district.
