Two lives claimed in separate motorcycle accidents

OTTUMWA — Two separate motorcycle accidents on Thursday night have claimed two lives in southeast Iowa.

Ottumwa police were called to the scene at 11:38 p.m. in the 400 block of South Madison Avenue.

Authorities reported that Scott Alan Smith, 40, of Ottumwa, was killed when he apparently lost control of his motorcycle after traveling at a high rate of speed. An investigation of the accident determined that after losing control of the motorcycle, Smith was thrown after his bike left the roadway, struck a curb and hit a security pole.

Smith was transported to the Ottumwa Regional Health Center, where he was pronounced dead. The accident remains under investigation by the OPD.

Earlier in the evening, Iowa State Patrol responded to a two-vehicle accident in Jefferson County which killed a Fairfield man.

Robert Daley II, 60, of Fairfield, was killed after crashing into a pickup truck on Libertyville Road near Fairfield.

Jordan Bradfield, 17, of Fairfield, was driving west on Libertyville Road at 8:40 p.m., and was turning left into a private driveway. As Bradfield was turning, Daley was driving a motorcycle east on Libertyville Road when he hit the passenger side of the truck, according to law enforcement officials.

Daley was taken to Jefferson County Hospital, where he later died.

The accident remains under investigation.
