Area farmers working to salvage crops

By SCOTT NILES Courier staff writer

“This could be better if it rains,” he said.

Yeager said he had his applicator out on Monday and was going to reapply some nitrogen to the soil, but his main focus was finishing planting his beans and corn.

Yeager said he would like to cultivate his fields as well, but he doesn’t have time.

“We still have quite a bit of replanting to do,” he said.

“There is still hope for the crops,” Carlton said. “Farmers are just going to have to get out there and scout and see if there is anything we can do about it.

“That is about all they can do at this point, besides controlling their weeds. That is something they should be doing now, too.”

“At this point it is all uncertain ... it is up to Mother Nature to see what we can recover,” McBeth said.

Scott Niles can be reached at (641) 683-5360 or via e-mail at sjniles@mchsi.com.
