Lots of family fun at Monroe County Fair
By SCOTT NILES Courier staff writer
ALBIA — The Monroe County Fair, now under way, offers all the traditional events and some new ones.
“This year we are adding the square dancing tractors on Friday,” said Monroe County Fair Board President Dean Bettis. “They are a group from Nemaha, Iowa. This is their last year. It should be some good entertainment.”
Another new event is the king contest, which will be included with the queen contest.
“We have 11 queen contestants and two king contestants,” said Queen Committee Member Melissa Ballard. “This is the first year we have had the king contest, but we hope to make it an annual thing.”
That will be held at 7 p.m. Friday.
“It is kind of the kick off to the fair,” Ballard said. “The judging has already been done, but we will be announcing the winner and crowning them on Friday.”
The prince and princess contest will take place on Sunday.
“Other than that, we just have our traditional events,” Bettis said.
There will also be a dunk tank this year, where all the proceeds will go to the tornado victims in Parkersburg.
There will be livestock shows everyday.
“We will have some inflatable carnival stuff,” Bettis said.
He said the crowd favorite — the demolition derby — is also part of this year’s fair.
Family night, Bettis said, will be held Sunday where youngsters can get involved in different events including the tug-of-war contest and the hot dog eating contest.
“It is a family-oriented event and we encourage everyone to come out,” Bettis said. “We are just hoping for good weather and good attendance.”
Parking is $2 per day or $5 for the entire run of the fair.
