History and street work on council agenda

BY CINDY TOOPES COURIER STAFF WRITER

OTTUMWA — History will take another step forward Tuesday night if the Ottumwa City Council approves a government grant application to hire a consultant.

Planning Director Dave Shafer has recommended the council approve a certified local government grant application for funds to nominate the North Fellows (Rose Addition) Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places.

The grant would also help with creating a multiple-property document for Post-World War II Development in Ottumwa.

Shafer said the Ottumwa Historic Preservation Commission requested the city apply for $9,874.40 in grant funding to hire a consultant to complete the nomination process.

Within the consent agenda, Shafer has another item concerning a CLG grant for nonprofit organizations receiving Emergency Shelter Grant funds from state grantees.

Shafer has requested the mayor sign the certification of approval for the Homeless Shelter Operations Grant Program.

The council will also consider approving:

• Bid and contract for demolishing structures on four city lots.

• Pay requests for Southern Iowa Mechanical of Ottumwa for street patch repairs and emergency replacement of a manhole near Pennsylvania Avenue and Jefferson Street.

• The change in the work on East Manning Avenue to full-width, full-depth reconstruction from the 400 block to the cul-de-sac.

• Payment to Turner Concrete Construction of Ottumwa for repairs on Deppe Lane.

• Purchase of a replacement pump for Barton’s Branch pump station.

The council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers, City Hall. The session is open to the public and will be broadcast live on GO-TV, cable Channel 6.
