Delta Post Office status in question

By Cindy Toopes, Courier staff writer

DELTA — The Delta Post Office may close if the U.S. Postal Service and the Delta Community Fire Department Board can’t agree on a new contract.

June Rice, the fire board’s secretary, told the Courier the next public meeting about the post office will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Delta Town and Country building.

The town’s post office is housed is a building owned by the fire board and currently has 48 rented city boxes and 218 rural route stops.

The Sigourney News-Review reported Aug. 6 that U.S. Postal Service officials in Des Moines indicated they “were having a difficult time negotiating a new lease with the building’s owners” but were “still working” on it.

“We have a strong desire to keep our post office. Of late many have written to our congressmen and we are expecting some of them at Thursday’s meeting,” Rice said.

Currently, the post office is set to close Aug. 30. Delta’s population is 409.
