OTTUMWA — Authorities have arrested seven of the eight people who were rescued from the Des Moines River during the worst of this summer's flooding.
The Wapello County Sheriff's Department arrested James Harland, 34, Jennifer Utterback, 24, Samul Kitterman, 20, Amber Utterback, 23, David Richards, 38, Antonio Jiminez, 20, and Cheri Richards, 44, on burglary charges. Each person faces two counts; all are from Ottumwa.
The sheriff's department made the arrests after investigating the June 15 burglaries of two homes on the Des Moines River north of Ottumwa.
Authorities had to rescue the alleged burglars after their boat capsized near the Blackhawk access to the Des Moines River. The rescue involved both the sheriff's department and the Ottumwa Fire Department. The rescue itself was difficult, and the Ottumwa Fire Department lost its boat in the attempt.
All of the people charged are being held in the Wapello County Jail.
