Jones, The Beach Ottumwa working to plan benefit bash concert for disaster victims

By SCOTT NILES Courier staff writer

OTTUMWA — Even though Iowa’s floodwaters have receded, disaster relief is still needed across the state and one man is trying to help out here and beyond.

Chuck Jones, sole proprietor of Thunderock Promotions in Ottumwa, has decided to collaborate with The Beach Ottumwa to throw an upcoming benefit bash concert for disaster victims and the National Disaster Relief Fund.

“When the whole state was deluged in the months of June and July I was approached by a friend of mine that works on the parks review board,” Jones said.

The two went to see the city’s new parks director about the bash and days later, Jones was approached by City Councilman Keith Caviness about such an event.

“ ... Caviness approached me and took the idea to the city council and it was a unanimous vote 5-0 to do it,” he said.

Jones, who has been involved with disaster relief benefits in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, said he hopes the event will raise at least $10,000.

The bash will feature the bands: Re-coil, Crimson Hood, Middle Ground Zero, RoadTrip, Blemish and ScooterNeil. The music featured is described as country, country rock and 80s and 90s cover songs.

“They are from all over the Midwest. They are mainly bands that are under contract with my silent partner from Denver, Colo. No local talent was available for this concert,” he said.

Jones said these bands are bigger and more widely known than the ones that played for the other benefits in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines.

“Each of these bands have at least two or three CDs out at this point,” he said. “I was very lucky to have them in the area.”

The concert will be held from 12-9 p.m. Sept. 14 inside The Beach Ottumwa. Advance tickets are $10 and can be purchased at North or South Hy Vee or the Second Street Kum & Go. Tickets will also be available at the door for $15.

There will be catered food and beverages as well.

“There will be pretty much something for everyone,” Jones said.
