Gallegos faces federal drug charges
Indictment also names father and uncle of suspect

DES MOINES — Court records show an Ottumwa man charged with attempted murder and assaulting a police officer is facing federal drug charges as well.
Miguel Angel Gallegos Jr., 23, is accused of conspiracy to distribute drugs in a grand jury indictment that also names his father, Miguel Angel Gallegos Sr., and uncle, Jose Alfredo Gallegos.
The indictment is the first document that clearly shows Gallegos’ legal problems go beyond the state level, but it is not a surprise. Local authorities confirmed earlier this month that Gallegos had outstanding federal arrest warrants that had not been executed because he was in custody at the Wapello County Jail.
At the time that information came out the indictment naming Gallegos, his father and uncle was under seal. The indictment dates to June, but the case was only unsealed this month.
Prosecutors allege Gallegos worked with his uncle and father to distribute at least five grams of methamphetamine.
Past cases suggest additional charges are possible. Federal prosecutors used a conspiracy charge to indict members of an Ottumwa cocaine ring before expanding the list of charges later in the case.
Gallegos is scheduled to go on trial in January for the December 2008 shooting of Oscar Leyva. Authorities have said they believe the shooting was gang related. His father is also indicted in the attempted murder.
He is also scheduled for a January trial on charges that he attacked an Ottumwa police officer in August. He has pleaded not guilty in both cases.
