Eakins, Miller to face off for mayor in Bloomfield special election
By PAT SHAVER Courier staff writer
BLOOMFIELD — Voters in Bloomfield will head to the polls again on Tuesday after no mayoral candidate received 50 percent plus one vote in the regular election earlier this month.
Out of the four initial candidates, the top two will fight for the position. Incumbent Sam Eakins received 113 votes and Chris Miller received 170 votes. Candidates Jennie Wilcox got 111 votes and Terry Bradley received 62 votes.
Now, between Eakins and Miller, the candidate with the most votes will be appointed mayor, according to the Davis County auditor’s office.
“There’s a lot of things going on right now; projects and projected projects in the future that I would like to see through,” said Eakins.
Eakins, who has been mayor of Bloomfied for about eight years, said he has a few unfinished projects that he would like to finish before he is done leading the city. His major goals include community economic development projects like a $2 million hotel project, the local option sales tax, hotel/motel tax and more.
“I’m not ready to step down yet and turn them over to someone else,” Eakins said.
Miller sees things differently, however. He thinks the city is ready for new leadership.
“[I’m] somebody that’s going to ask a lot of questions, that’s going to be involved and that’s energetic,” he said.
Miller said as mayor, he would push for cleaning and updating Bloomfield’s downtown square.
“My main goal is to get people who come through Bloomfield to take a look at what we got to offer and get them to stop their cars and shop and everything,” Miller said.
The last time Bloomfield had to hold a runoff election was in the 2005 city council race, said Linda Humphrey, Davis County auditor.
When Eakins first ran for mayor, four others ran against him, which led to a runoff election.
“It’s nothing I haven’t been through before,” he said.
Bloomfield residents will be able to vote at their regular polling locations between from 12-8 p.m. Tuesday.
