Oskaloosa man dies in accidental shooting

OSKALOOSA — An Oskaloosa man died from a gunshot wound at the Hull Shooting range west of Oskaloosa Wednesday afternoon.

The Mahaska County Sheriff's Office received a phone call at about 1:30 p.m. stating “there was an individual lying on the ground with what appeared to be a gunshot wound at the Hull Shooting range four miles west of Oskaloosa,” according to a press release from the Mahaska County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies arrived and saw that the individual was semi-conscious. He was transported to Mahaska Health Partnership by ambulance and died a few hours later as a result of the gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The victim has been identified as Daniel Eugene Karow, 73, of Oskaloosa, according to the press release.

“It appears the individual was unloading a revolver when it went off striking him in the abdomen,” the release said.

The Mahaska County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources investigated the shooting.
