Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont policy restricts Wednesday activities

Policy made to ensure family time for students

CENTERVILLE — To encourage “family time,” the Eddyville-Blakesbrg-Fremont School Board has set a policy which will limit student activities on Wednesday nights.

Board President Deb Bahr explained that the board would like to limit district facility use by students on Wednesday nights so that families can count on at least one night per week for family time.

This would also allow janitors time to clean and prepare the district’s gyms for games and activities. Currently there are so many activities scheduled in district gyms that they are rarely empty for cleaning.

The policy reads in part, “In order to reduce conflict with community and family activities, no school functions, practices and or activities are to be scheduled after 6 p.m. on any Wednesday night.”

According to the policy, administrators may occasionally allow an activity when special circumstances exist.

Administrators explained that this isn’t a new policy; it just hasn’t really been enforced.

Beginning as soon as possible,  the board hopes to keep all Pre-K-12 students out of district buildings Wednesday evenings.

“As administrators, we are going to do the best we can to see that this happens,” said Superintendent Dean Cook.

However, some board members asked that facilities still be available for adult groups, such as a men’s basketball league. So, the board decided to allow that at the administrator’s discretion in all gyms except for the main gym at the high school so janitors can prep it for activities.
