Wapello County’s website is just five years old, but the board of supervisors say it’s time for an update.
Supervisor Steve Siegel said Professional Computer Solutions, the county’s current Internet provider, will give a presentation on the county’s website at the board’s Tuesday meeting.
“Several months ago we had a company from out of town approach us about redoing our website,” Siegel said. “Our current website is about five years old and we’re looking to update it, to do some things it can’t currently do. For example, live ‘as they’re happening’ election results and making it more user-friendly so people can access more information.
“What we have is better than what we had before, but it’s time to modernize it a bit.”
The board will also set a date for a special election in Eldon for Local Option Sales Tax, which was narrowly defeated in the November general election. Siegel said the board is looking at March 5 for the potential date.
A bridge is due to be replaced on Point Isabelle Road approximately 1 mile south of Ottumwa, Siegel said. The bridge’s weight restrictions mean it’s time for a completely new bridge, the construction of which would likely start this spring.
The board will also hear from the county engineer, who also serves as the county’s weed commissioner.
“Once a year he gives us a report, which has a little checklist of primary and secondary obnoxious weeds, which ones were found, which ones are a problem in our county,” Siegel said. “Then we base our spraying on county ditches off of that. There are also individuals who their neighbors might turn them in for having obnoxious weeds.”
The board will declare “Public Measure J” as adopted at the meeting, as well. The measure was to approve a continuation of a tax that allows for equipment replacement at Indian Hills Community College.
In the 10 counties where the tax applies, the measure received 606 “Yes” votes and 196 “No” votes.
The board will meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the third-floor board room in the Wapello County Courthouse.
