OTTUMWA — It's that time of year again. Summer is over, winter has yet to begin, and bridges need preparation.
The Jefferson Street Viaduct will be closed most of Tuesday so it can be sprayed with linseed oil. Spraying leaves the bridge with a thin layer of the oil, enough to help protect it against snow, ice and salt, but not so much it makes the spean slippery.
Crews will close the viaduct at about 8:15 a.m. Tuesday. It should reopen by the end of the day, but drivers will need to find a way around it for much of Tuesday.
The work will be postponed if unfavorable weather develops, but the forecast calls for sunny and seasonal conditions.
