---- — LIBERTYVILLE — While conducting a search Oct. 11, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office found a deceased infant in a closet.
At approximately 4:45 a.m. Oct. 11, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to 703 E. Maple, Libertyville, in reference to a deceased infant. Authorities responded and found a deceased infant.
The sheriff’s office applied for and was granted a search warrant for the property. While conducting that search, a deceased infant was discovered in a closet in the residence. It appeared as if the infant girl had been recently born.
After further investigation, it was determined that a 15-year-old female had given birth to the child sometime on the morning of Oct. 10. The 15-year-old has been charged with child endangerment resulting in death, which is an offense, if committed by an adult, that would be a Class “B” felony and punishable by up to 50 years in prison.
Given her age, this charge must be filed in Jefferson County Juvenile Court. Iowa law allows the option of applying to waive the juvenile to adult court. In this case, all options are still being considered. Any application to waive jurisdiction to adult court would be decided by the court.
Parties and agencies assisting with this investigation were the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner, the Jefferson County Medical Examiner, the Iowa Department of Human Services and the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office.
