OTTUMWA - Monday will bring necessary improvements in several locations around town, and residents may need to change their plans and activities accordingly.
Crews will be applying a herbicide to control weeds on the south bank of the Des Moines River, from the hydroelectric dam to just past the Jefferson Street Viaduct. The work is scheduled to take place Monday as weather and water conditions permit. Controlling vegetation is an important part of regular levee maintenance.
People who fish from the bank along that section will be asked to fish elsewhere during this work. Use of the trail on the levee may be temporarily interrupted by workers or equipment in the area.
For more information about this project, contact the City Engineering Department at 683-0680.
In addition, motorists are advised that sections of Locust Street will be closed starting Monday. Work will consist of installing a new sanitary sewer line. With favorable conditions, expect work to be completed at the end of October. Drivers should be prepared for work zone conditions and seek other routes around the project.
