Weekend snow in forecast

Courier staff writer

---- — OTTUMWA — Area residents will like one part of this weekend’s forecast: it’s going to warm up.

After several days of unusually cold temperatures, forecast highs will move higher on Sunday. It’s still going to be below normal, but a Sunday high of 25 will be warmer than the arctic blast that moved in Thursday.

The bad news: the warmup will probably bring the area its first significant snowfall of the season. The National Weather Service gives Ottumwa an 80 percent chance of snow Sunday and a 50 percent chance Sunday night.

Meteorologist Craig Cogil said the storm will bring “light to moderate snowfall across the entire state.”

The storm bringing the snow is starting well to the southwest. Since warm air can carry more moisture than cold air, it’s not surprising that the front is bringing snow.

Northwestern Iowa will likely see the most snow, with southeastern Iowa seeing 2-3 inches, Cogil said. But it’s early and things can change. Whether it will impact Monday morning, as drivers and students return to work and school, isn’t yet clear.
