OTTUMWA — The League of Women Voters of Ottumwa will sponsor a candidate forum at 7 p.m. tonight in the Council Chambers at City Hall. The public is encouraged to attend.
Candidates for council will answer questions from 7 p.m. to approximately 8 p.m. Mayoral candidates will start answering questions at 8:05 p.m.
All six candidates for the three positions on the Ottumwa City Council have been invited, and all indicate they will participate. The candidates are Keith Caviness, Matt Dalbey, Robert LaPoint, Bob Meyers, Belinda Smith-Cicarella and Skip Stevens.
Both candidates for the office of mayor were invited to the forum. Frank Flanders and Tom Lazio have both indicted they will participate.
The League will ask several questions of the candidates, but most questions will come from the audience. Questions must be written and must be signed. The League provides paper and pencils. They reserve the right to combine redundant questions. A League member will read each question to the candidates twice. Each candidate will have the opportunity to answer every question, even if the question is directed at a specific candidate.
The League of Women Voters of Iowa is nonpartisan. The candidates will be seated in alphabetical order. Incumbents will have no preference. Each candidate will have the opportunity to make a two-minute opening statement and a one-minute closing statement. Each candidate will have one minute to answer each question.
This forum is designed to allow voters to hear all the candidates respond to a variety of issues so the voters can make an informed decision next Tuesday. It is also designed to allow candidates to identify their unique opinions, abilities and plans for public service.
Live coverage will be provided by KBIZ and GOTV. GOTV will also rebroadcast the forum in its entirety on Friday and Monday.
