FAIRFIELD -- Authorities in Montana say they have recovered the bodies of a grandmother and two grandchildren after the car they were in rolled into the Clark Fork River, including that of a Fairfield resident.
Authorities were called Friday after a witness reported seeing a car sinking into the river. Difficult conditions prevented authorities from recovering the vehicle until Sunday. Inside were Kathy Legard, 63, Jake Legard, 13, and Payten Yoder, a four-year-old from Fairfield.
The accident occurred about 13 miles west of Plains, Mont. Authorities believe the car rolled out of a driveway and across a road before going down a 15-foot embankment into the river.
Correction: The initial version of the story included erroneous information on one of the victims. It has been corrected.
