Trial date set in case of Osky infant's murder

Ottumwa Courier

---- — OSKALOOSA — The trial date has been set for an Oskaloosa man charged with murdering an infant.

On Friday, Bryan Draper Vilcone, 24, learned his trial date will be Oct. 8. Last week, he pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, a Class A felony.

On April 18, Oskaloosa Police officers responded to the Mahaska Health Partnership Emergency Room to investigate a report of possible child abuse. Upon arrival, they learned that 7-week-old Raelynn M. Hart was receiving treatment for injuries. The child’s mother said the baby received the injuries while in the care of a family friend, Vilcone, of 707 Second Ave. E. in Oskaloosa.

Hart was later transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines for treatment of her injuries. At that time, the OPD requested the DCI’s help in further investigating the alleged abuse.

On April 21, Hart died as a result of the injuries she received three days prior. The Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy the following day, which revealed that she likely died of abusive head trauma.

On April 23, officers arrested Vilcone and charged him in the death of the infant.

Vilcone's pretrial conference will be held Sept. 26.
