OTTUMWA — A house fire on Ottumwa's south side was handled quickly Friday morning, but the damage was still extensive.
According to Ottumwa Fire Department reports, a call came in at 12:41 a.m. Friday that the house at 702 E. Williams St. was on fire. Three trucks responded to the fire call, meaning a full crew was on hand. They were on the scene within four minutes of receiving the call.
Reports also indicate that the fire was under control by 1:05 a.m., and the last unit cleared the scene at 3:10 a.m. after making sure the situation was safe to leave.
The house had been purchased from the city of Ottumwa by Southern Iowa Ventures in June, and employees boarding up the house Friday said the goal had been to have it fixed up to rent out before school started. They also described the inside of the house as "all smoked out."
The fire is under investigation, and no further details were available from the fire department.
