"We've been a fire department since 1858," said Miller. "He is the first Ottumwa firefighter to graduate the police academy."
He did well, Miller said. Benge was one shot off out of 300 participants for the top shooting award. And he was named class president, something Miller "got a kick out of," he said.
"A firefighter was president of the police academy class," Miller said.
"Last year there were six arsons in Ottumwa," Benge said. "Only one of those is going to court. This [addition of police powers and training] will make my job easier, and is an asset to the citizens of Ottumwa.
