OTTUMWA — Though Monday was the first day to file for school board candidacy, Ottumwa incumbents and challengers will have until Aug. 1 to decide if they're going to run.
Three of the current seats are up for re-election: Carol Mitchell, Payson Moreland and Jeff Strunk.
The board secretary in Ottumwa said no one has asked her for paperwork, but those forms are actually available in several places: the school board secretary at the central office, the county auditor at the courthouse or online at the Iowa Secretary of State website.
It's not clear whether any of the board members currently serving will campaign for another term.
"At this time I'm undecided," said Mitchell, the current board president. "I plan to make my decision in the next couple weeks. I served on the board for 12 years and loved every minute of it. I'm just undecided as to whether or not to make another three-year commitment."
Efforts to reach Moreland and Strunk were unsuccessful by press time on Wednesday.
Candidates for their local board of education must be U.S. citizens eligible to vote in the school district. The rules and dates apply across Iowa.
