---- — OTTUMWA — At Tuesday night's meeting, the Wapello County Supervisors approved a letter of support to the Iowa Tourism Office.
The board members also requested that state officials add their names to the list of supporters for Ottumwa's bid for the 2015 Iowa Tourism Conference.
"Ottumwa could be the site of the tourism conference," Supervisor Greg Kenning said.
Board members noted several tourism items that could attract people to Wapello County. Those items include the Gothic House in Eldon, the Pioneer Museum of Flight in Blakesburg and the Pioneer Ridge Nature Area seven miles south of Ottumwa.
"We see the Convention and Visitors Bureau as a vital player in the success of these entities and recognize that your event will enhance the exposure of these to the tourism community," Kenning wrote.
Also, Kenning said the supervisors are pleased that the Wapello County area is being considered for the conference and "feel we'll be able to make this a valuable experience for all involved."Kenning said Eckman had indicated Ottumwa's selection as a tourism site hadn't been confirmed yet. Officials from the Iowa Tourism Council Office will be in Ottumwa today to evaluate the city as a tourism site.
"If we could get the tourism conference, that would be a real boon," Kenning said. "I think we've taken a real step up the ladder."
