OTTUMWA — There’s nothing like real-world experience to increase a student’s knowledge, and college trustees will hear about one of those experiences at their board meeting Monday.
That experience is one reason Indian Hills Community College President Jim Lindenmayer is glad students from the health program were able to help victims of a natural disaster. The other reason stems from the fact that they were in Central America at the time.
”We had some Health Occupations students down to Costa Rica, helping after a hurricane, I believe it was, and they received [college] credit for that. It’s a big deal to us because we’re working to expand our global presence,” Lindenmayer said.
The board meeting will take place 4 p.m. Monday in the board room of the main campus. The public is welcome to attend.
The trustees will hear about the student adventure on the same day they are expected to discuss tuition for next year and decide what that tuition will be. To do that, they’ll have knowledge of college expenses and revenue.
Plans will also be made for the annual joint meeting of the IHCC board and the board of Great Prairie Area Education. By the time that meeting comes up, Lindenmayer said he’ll probably be gone, but it’s a chance for the college to see what K-12 schools are doing, as well as showing the AEA what initiatives Indian Hills is working on.
”We do have a common service area. And it’s actually in Iowa code we should meet annually,” Lindenmayer said.
