OTTUMWA — A vehicle that appears to have tried to beat a train at a railroad crossing in Ottumwa was struck, totaling the pickup truck and sending at least one person to the hospital.

Though their investigation is not yet complete, emergency workers said that around 9:30 p.m. Monday, an accident occurred at the railroad tracks near Hayne off of Main Street.

A small pickup truck with two occupants tried to beat in on coming train. It is unclear whether the arms were already down, but an investigator at the scene said they were clearly past the arms at the time of the accident.

A firefighter reported that of the two occupants at least one was treated for injuries. Official said that none of the injuries appear to be life threatening. There were no injuries reported among the crew of the train. Ottumwa Fire Department, OPD, ORMICS and railway crews were on scene.
