---- — BLAKESBURG — A replacement to fill the Blakesburg City Council seat vacated when Alan Bettis moved out of town last month was not named as expected during Monday's City Council meeting.
Mayor Jason Myers explained to the audience that the council is not allowed to appoint his replacement because the county is holding a special election July 9 to fill the county recorder vacancy. He further explained that candidates for the City Council position must follow the usual candidacy procedures of obtaining and filing papers.
Papers are available at City Hall to all interested candidates and should be picked up soon. The person elected July 9 will be seated in August. The good news is that the election will not cost the city anything, Myers said.
A report on the sewer improvement project contained good news as well as disappointing information.
A change order decreased the total cost of the project by about $11,000. However, due to weather-related issues and other complications, Visu Sewer cannot complete the work by the end of May as scheduled. The council approved the requested extension to an undetermined date as well as a payment of the second billing of $109,349.
In other business the council:
— Approved the Corn Carnival Association-sponsored fireworks display on Sept. 14 and a $500 donation to the fireworks fund.
— Approved the citywide garage sale for June 8 as well as a map showing each sale location. A $3 fee payable at City Hall is required for a sale listing on the map to be created.
— Approved a citywide cleanup the weekend of June 14-15 with Dumpsters in the same location as last year.
