OTTUMWA — There was more than football happening Friday night in Ottumwa, as Market On Main held a fundraising event, "Meet At the Market" behind Appanoose Rapids Brewing Company to help raise funding for the market that will soon occupy the corner of Main and Jefferson Street.
Those in attendance were treated to drinks and food, as well as music and the company of others whoshared in the passion to help downtown Ottumwa grow.
Appanoose Rapids had several dinner and drink specials open to guests, with all of the drink proceeds getting donated directly to the market. They brewed a special sangria using only wine made in the area, sticking to the theme of the market.
"We are all for anything new happening downtown, and we'll do everything we can to help themout," General Manager Tim Ware said.
Guests were also able to meet the market's largest local project donors, who put together teams that walked around the crowd to gather more donations. Several local businesses worked the crowd and had items up for raffle later in the evening.
"The market is good for revitalizing the downtown," John Deere team member Marsha Parker said. "Just like other things in Ottumwa, it is on the move up."
Indian Hills culinary students provided appetizers, and the Young Professionals Organization droppedin to help do their part in raising money for the market. Local celebrities Tanner Varner, defensive back for the Orlando Predators and Ottumwa native, and KTVO reporters Kate, Kamady, Tess and Laura also made an appearance.
The market also set up a booth, cleverly under the shade of an umbrella, where they sold shirts andanswered any questions about the market.
"This event is a way for us to get our name and logo out to the public," Project Director Heather Ware said.
Market On Main is set to open its doors in early 2014, and will support energy efficiency as well as sustainability and responsible uses of natural resources. It will house a year-round farmer's market, locally-sourced grocery store, educational kitchens and an outdoor green space for events and promotions.
