Final Bank Night for Alzheimer's Walk Wednesday

Courier staff writer

---- — OTTUMWA — The Alzheimer's Association Greater Iowa Chapter will hold its third and final Bank Night from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday at The Vine Coffee House.

The Bank Night is the last time to preregister teams or individuals for the Walk to End Alzheimer's event that will take place Saturday at Indian Hills Community College. It is also a time to donate money to the cause, which is in its fifth year in south central Iowa.

Signing up for the walk at the Bank Night is a way for participants to beat the rush on walk day and is the perfect opportunity for those not participating in the walk to donate money to support their favorite team or individual.

The first two Bank Nights have been rather successful and have aided 16 teams and 70 total walkers with getting registered for the event. Approximately $8,500 has been raised so far this year for Alzheimer's support, care and research, nearly half of the association's goal of $18,000. In all, up to 200 walkers are expected to participate, according to Michelle Kelman, director of outreach for the Greater Iowa Chapter.

"We would love to have everyone from south-central Iowa to come out," Kelman said. "The more people that register, the more people we are able to help."

Saturday is set as the date for the Walk to End Alzheimer's. Registration starts at 9 a.m. at the Advanced Technology Center, and the opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m.

The walk is 2 1/2 miles, and participants will learn more about the Alzheimer's disease, advocacy opportunities, clinical trial treatment and support programs. There will also be a tribute ceremony for those dealing with the disease and several family activities throughout the day.

"We have this walk to help people who battle this disease," Kelman said. "Our goal is to have a world without Alzheimer's."
