OTTUMWA — The Courier launched a new web product Wednesday, allowing residents to see where police reports pinpoint crimes and arrests.
The map is based on the Ottumwa Police Department's reports, which are available for public viewing. By using a spreadsheet, the Courier is able to turn the reports into a map that shows where police are being called and what they're being called for.
This map differs from the police reports included in the daily paper. Print reports include names, but the program used to convert the spreadsheet limits the information available online. The Courier chose to show the date and event, since those fit the purposes of the map. Full reports remain available in the paper each day.
Currently, the map includes the past week of reports. But it will be expanded as time goes on, with the goal of allowing viewers to see the past month's worth of activity.
The map is on the Courier's website at http://ottumwacourier.com/policemap.
